League of Women Voters of Butte County Board Meeting Minutes January 14, 2020 6:30-8:00 pm, LWV Office 635 Flume

- 1. Call to Order
Meeting called to order at 6:33 pm.
- 2. Mission Moment
Board members reflected on the statement: “LWV began as a mighty political experiment to help new voters exercise their civic responsibilities.”
- 3. Approve November Meeting Minutes
The November meeting minutes were approved.
4. Corrections, June Minutes
Helen Gesick is not stepping down as webmaster.
5. Nominating Committee Chair, Debra Barger
Linda suggested Andy and Kathy to be the board’s representatives on the Nominating Committee. Claire Greene and Mary Kota are the two non-board members of the Nominating Committee.
Motion:
Motion passed unanimously for Andy and Kathy to be on the Nominating Committee with Kathy abstaining.
Debra updated Board members on the positions that will be coming up for election in the next year. Board members discussed how some of the five director positions coming up for election do not have specific portfolios or duties attached to them. In addition to the director positions, the 2nd Vice President and Treasurer positions are also coming up for election. Board members discussed the need to rebuild committees to help directors with LWV work.
Board members agreed that the 2nd Vice President would retain membership duties. Debra suggested that one of the directors take on voter registration outreach, one director be in charge of communications, and one director become an assistant to the 1st Vice President on voter service duties.
Board members further discussed and brainstormed duties for LWV directors, such as a county liaison to work on outreach to the entirety of Butte County.
Board members set the date of the annual meeting as Tuesday, May 26th, 2020.
6. Director Update, Membership
Some board members are calling league members who still need to renew their annual memberships.
On Tuesday, January 21st, Debra will hold a voter registration training at 5:30 pm in the league office. On Tuesday, January 28th, LWVBC will be at every Butte County Library branch doing voter registration.
7. Director Update, Women’s March, January 18th
Mary Kay updated board members about the upcoming Women’s March on January 18th. Debra is looking for volunteers to help staff the LWV table at the march.
8. Proclamation, LWV 100th Anniversary
Board members discussed a proclamation celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the League of Women Voters of the United States.
Motion:
Mary Kay moved and Abe seconded a motion to send the proclamation celebrating the 100th anniversary of the League of Women Voters of the United States to the Butte County Board Supervisors, all Butte County city or town councils, Rep. Gallagher, Rep. Nielsen, and all Butte County school boards. Motion passed unanimously.
9. February 13th Potluck/Birthday and Census Forum
Board members discussed plans for the upcoming February 13th Potluck/Birthday and Census Forum at the Chico Masonic Family Center.
10. Director Update, Voter Service, Candidate Questions
Board members discussed potential questions for the Butte County Board of Supervisors’ Candidate Forum. Carol updated board members about plans for the candidate forum, and board members discussed the plans and logistics for the forum. The candidate will be live streamed and recorded. Board members discussed potential question topics for the forum, such as questions about housing, disaster preparedness, and water issues, and how to frame questions so that they can be answered in the one minute time allowed for answers.
11. Director Update, Voter Service, Speed Dating Training
Board members discussed plans for the upcoming speed dating event planned for February 1st. The event will be from 9:30 am – Noon. Carol updated board members on which candidates will be participating in the event. Each table will have a facilitator to run the table. We need a minimum of ten league members to help run the event.
