Post Convention Summary

President's Letter

Dear fellow League members,

The 2021 LWVC Convention was remarkable...the first virtual convention and one with huge participation. Sixty-one Leagues and ILOs (Inter League Organization) sent 214 delegates to the plenary (business) sessions of the convention. Over 500 people attended the 15 workshops and 5 caucuses during Convention week.  The participation rate is probably due to this being a virtual convention. This event truly spotlighted the movement of League members “From Boomers to Zoomers.”

Thank you to all Leagues who gave their members the opportunity to see the full depth and breadth of League work and aspirations.

Most especially, I thank everyone who sponsored the convention financially and who offered workshops and caucuses.  Your willingness to share your money and knowledge with the state at large shows a generosity of spirit that makes the League of Women Voters a vibrant, effective grassroots organization.

This convention featured much sharing of information and projects among our local Leagues. The Great Ideas! workshops featured local League voter service and education/advocacy projects that were successful for them and that could be replicated by any League in the state.

The 15 workshops covered all the issues for education and advocacy adopted by League members during the convention.  In addition there were workshops on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy and on internal League operations.  Several of the issue workshops also introduced toolkits for League use.

Look at the Post Convention site for recordings and the presentation slides of the workshops and caucuses.

To get the full information on the Convention’s contents please:

  1. See the Post-Convention Summary in this Update for a summary of the action and decisions made during plenary.

  2. Find the recordings and presentation slides on workshops and caucuses on the Post Convention site.

  3. Stay involved post-convention: join discussion groups (list serves) on various topics and connect on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram

  4. Click here for the speeches of Executive Director Stephanie Doute and here for that of President Moon Goldberg.

As discussed in the closing session on Sunday, LWVC has two new tools for advocacy. The first is a Homelessness Action Policy which pulls together League positions as they apply to this issue and which is discussed in the workshop on this topic. The second is technically an update to the K-12 Education position of LWVC. The LWVC Board of Directors concurred with a position from LWV Fresno regarding the implementation and enforcement of standards for authorization and reauthorization of charter schools.  It will appear as item 18 and 19 in the K-12 position. The text of this update is here.

One housekeeping item: Local League leaders, please fill out the Local League Information Form as soon as your new boards are elected.

Thank you all for your hard work on behalf of the League. As we move forward into the future please remember this.  A representative democracy only works when all are represented. As a League we are most effective and impactful in our voter service and advocacy work when the League looks like California. We will continue our excellent voter service work; we will continue to deepen our advocacy impact; and we will continue to expand our equity work.

Looking forward to the work ahead,

Carol
