The April Board meeting was the second to be held via Zoom. President Pat Coulter congratulated the committees that are using conference calling and Zoom to conduct their meetings and continue their work. Some groups are also using Google Groups to share articles and information.

  • Thanks to the delegates to the LWVLAC convention. LWVLAC used email to send out information, and voting was done by mail.
  • The Events and Communications Committees are looking into ways to facilitate the continued presentation of speakers and information to members via technology. Options are being explored for the May League Day and the Annual Meeting in June.
  • Anne Wolf presented the slate of nominees for the 2020–2021 Board of Directors. It will appear in the June issue of the Voter.
  • Pat Coulter has said that she will not continue as president in 2020–2021.
  • Margan Zajdowicz brought the Board up to date on the precautions necessary during the coronavirus restrictions. Wash your hands and keep your distance!
  • Margan suggested that we think now about how we will handle League Days, the Voter, and other activities that are vital to the League. The restrictions are likely to continue for quite a while, and many of our activities that have involved face-to-face interactions will need to be addressed.
  • Year-end committee reports are due to Pat now.
  • Nominees for the Board need to send their biographies to Pat by May 14 for publication in the June Voter.
  • Treasurer Anita Mackey presented the proposed budget for 2020–2021. She explained some of the cost increases and reminded us that fundraisers that normally occur may not be held. The Board voted to present the budget as shown to the membership at the Annual Meeting.
  • Advocacy Director Debbie Fagen reported that petitions for the Schools and Communities First initiative got 1.7 million signatures, enough to be on the November 2020 ballot. LWV was responsible for a large number of those signatures!
  • We are grateful to Peter Zavala for his work on our website.
  • At the request of the Natural Resources committee, the Board agreed to co-sponsor the Altadena Heritage Area program for limiting single-use plastics. An email blast regarding this program will go out.
  • Units Director Gwen Jones is doing much better and will get the East Unit up and running again.
  • Director of Voter Services Martha Zavala shared concerns and ideas about how we can encourage voter turnout in November and how L.A. County will go about getting a mail-in ballot to all voters.
