On July 20, the League held its annual Ice Cream Social, which was also occasioned by an open house at its new location: 65 South Grand Avenue, Pasadena. And a good time was had by the more than one hundred guests who attended! Fosselman’s ice cream topped with chocolate fudge, butterscotch sauce, berries, and whipped cream was in abundance. Congressional Representative and League member Judy Chu, State Assembly Member Chris Holden, Pasadena Council and League member Margaret McAustin, Pasadena Unified School District Board and League member Kim Kenne, and former Assembly and League member Anthony Portantino were in attendance, as were Western Justice Center Executive Director Judge Judy Chirlin, former California Attorney General John Van De Kamp, Pasadena City College Trustees Jeannette Mann and Linda Wah, and Women Involved in South Pasadena Action President Lela Bissner.

Attendees enjoyed the lively music produced by Dad’s Band Plus One and participated in a fun New York Times quiz that tested their political acumen. Old and new friends laughed, exchanged stories, and toured the League’s new digs. Attendees was impressed with the Western Justice Center site, where the League is now located. Amenities include easy access to the federal Ninth Circuit Court building, exterior areas to entertain, and beautifully restored interior space suitable for board meetings, conferences, forums, and fundraisers. Most important, the Center offers the League affordable rent and stability for the at least the next five years! The office remains open from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Those wishing to visit are encouraged to call (626-798-0966) or e-mail (office [at] lwv-pa.org) in advance.

Patt Diroll, society columnist for the Pasadena Star News, wrote a saucy commentary on the event, which was included in the August 4, 2014, edition of the paper.
