Democracy and Voting

The primary and overarching priority of the League of Women Voters Pasadena Area is to advance and defend democracy and voting:

  • Educate ourselves and the community on the issues confronting democratic institutions in our area and throughout the country
  • Be a voice for informed and engaged voters
  • Be a voice for fair and open elections
  • Be a voice for transparent and accountable local government functions
  • Reach out to other Leagues to support them in their work against voter suppression

Civic Education

  • Support and monitor civic education in educational materials at all levels
  • Promote adult education in civics and civil discourse through public forums, with a focus on critical understanding of social media and misinformation
  • Create a civic education “course” for members, especially new members, that explains the workings of local governmental bodies (town councils, school boards, county supervisors), how to observe and monitor their local civic actions and what to look for, and how to approach education and advocacy within our communities. Outcome is creation and training of Observer Corps and “Know Your Town” volunteers.

Climate Change and the Environment

  • Expand and deepen partnerships with other engaged organizations within our communities
  • Support and monitor local municipal climate action plans (CAPs) and advocate for strong measures to mitigate climate change
  • Educate the public, local groups, and municipal bodies about the seriousness of climate change through presentations, events, and Voter articles
  • Discuss what actions we can personally take to practice environmental sustainability
  • Work for environmental justice

Housing and Homelessness

  • Advocate for affordable housing
  • Provide public information on housing elements and access to affordable housing throughout our service area

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

  • Incorporate DEI goals in all our activities
  • Continue to create and support special student membership groups in local schools and colleges
  • Emphasize outreach to underrepresented communities for events, membership, and leadership development
  • Support expanded presence of women in elected and appointed offices in our service area; begin by gathering and maintaining data
