Bill Boyarsky, former city editor of the Los Angeles Times; award-winning broadcast journalist Judy Muller; and rising star Mary Plummer, senior politics reporter for KPCC, will discuss the media’s role in this round of national elections, at LWV-PA’s fall kick-off event. Are you one of the people who feel that the media utterly failed to present balanced, informative stories on the primary elections, leading to the nomination of two relatively unpopular candidates?

The panelists will share their insights into how print, broadcast, and social media have influenced the campaigns so far. There will be a question and answer period after the panel discussion, so prepare your questions ahead of time.

The panel is composed of seasoned and thoughtful individuals. Bill Boyarsky is currently a political correspondent for Truthdig, blogs for LA Observed, writes for the Jewish Journal, and is a lecturer in journalism at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication. Before his stint as city editor at the Los Angeles Times, Boyarsky was a columnist, city-county bureau chief, and political writer. He was a member of reporting teams that won three Pulitzer prizes and was named Online Journalist of the Year by the LA Press Club.

Judy Muller is also a professor at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Previously, she was a correspondent with ABC News for fifteen years, reporting for World News with Peter Jennings, Nightline, and 20/20. From 1980 to 1990, she was a correspondent for CBS News, reporting for the radio network and for the television broadcast Sunday Morning. She has also served as a commentator for NPR’s “Morning Edition” and APR’s “Marketplace Money.” In recent years, Muller has been a contributing correspondent to PBS NewsHour, Al Jazeera America, and KCET TV’s “SoCal Connected,” where her reporting has won numerous honors.

Prior to becoming a senior politics reporter for KPCC, Mary Plummer was a reporter on SCPR's education team and an associate producer for “Take Two” and “The Madeleine Brand Show.” Plummer began her career in broadcast at ABC News in London, where she worked on television stories for the network’s news lineup and regularly covered Europe for ABCNews.com. As a politics reporter, Plummer covers the elections, voter turnout, and the way political power shapes communities.
