16 and want a front-row seat to democracy? Contra Costa County trains high school students to work the polls — welcoming voters, helping neighbors cast their ballots, and seeing an election from the inside.
Student poll workers earn a stipend and can earn community service credit. To qualify: age 16 or older on Election Day, a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, enrolled in high school, a GPA of 2.5 or better, and permission from a parent and your school, plus a training session. The county recruits students every election cycle — 182 students from 34 high schools served in the last November election.
