As we celebrate the 101st anniversary of the 19th amendment that gave all women citizens of the United States the right to vote, let's also remember that some women already were able to vote in local elections.

Kansas recognized that right in 1887.

That year, as a joke, some men placed Susanna Salter's name on the ballot for mayor of Argonia, Kansas. A Vote For Susanna, The First Woman Mayor, by Karen Greenwald, tells the story of Susanna's victory for young readers.

The National Women's History Museum is featuring the book launch as part of "Brave Girls Initiative!"
The launch is set for Oct 1, 11 am–noon CDT. The museums Brave Girls Virtual Storytime will feature A Vote for Susanna on Nov 10, 11 am. Both events are free but require registration.
