Monday, August 24: the bipartisan Michigan Board of State Canvassers met to consider whether the Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan (ACVM) ballot initiative would be on the November ballot after the nonpartisan Bureau of Elections determined ACVM failed to meet the signature threshold. The Board of State Canvassers meeting resulted in a 2-2 deadlock vote.

Thursday, August 27: Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan asked the Michigan Supreme Court to place the initiative on the ballot.

Monday, August 31: ACVM asked the U.S. Supreme Court to place the initiative on the ballot.

Thursday, September 3: Both the Michigan Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to place the initiative on the ballot. This is a tremendous victory for Michigan voters, who have repeatedly voted over the last decade to modernize and improve access to the ballot. It is also a testament to the thoroughness of the process to qualify for the ballot in Michigan. While we will likely continue to see attempts to limit access to the ballot, now is the time to pause and celebrate our victory.
