Michigan has no voter registration deadline. Any Michigander who is eligible to vote may register - and then cast a ballot - up until the polls close at 8 p.m. on Election Day. However, there are deadlines for using certain voter registration methods, which is what today’s shareables address.
Between now and October 18, Michiganders have many ways to register to vote:
Online (with a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID)
- At their city or township clerk’s office (or satellite office) or county clerk’s office
- At any state agency that provides public assistance or services to people with disabilities
- By mailing in a completed voter registration application postmarked by October 18
- Through a voter registration drive
Starting October 19 through 8 p.m. on Election Day, Michiganders have one one way to register to vote:
- Visit their city or township clerk’s office (or satellite office) and provide “proof of residency.”
So what is “proof of residency”? It’s a document with a voter’s name and current address in the city or township where they live. Paper or electronic copies of any of the following documents will work:
A Michigan driver’s license or state ID card
- A utility bill
- A bank statement
- A paycheck
- A government check
- Any other government document
Although it’s counterintuitive, a lease does not count as proof of residency.
