League of Women Voters Dearborn-Dearborn Heights is proud to partner with the Michigan Department of State to support nonpartisan poll worker recruitment.

This year, statewide elections will offer a minimum of 9-days of early in-person voting. This means more poll workers are needed to help voters and count ballots. To serve as a poll worker in Michigan, you must be:

• You must be at least 16 years of age.

• You must be a registered voter in Michigan if 18+ years of age.

Individuals aged 16 – 17 must be a Michigan resident.
You must not have a felony or election crime conviction.
You must not be an election challenger, a candidate, a member of a candidate's immediate family, or a member of the local board of canvasser

Hired workers will be paid for their time, and fully trained by local or county clerks to run elections in accordance with Michigan election law. Hiring and training sessions for the November election may be available throughout September, October, and November.

Election inspectors, the legal name for poll workers in Michigan, are paid by local governments to help administer elections. Poll workers open and close polling locations and early voting sites, process voters, and process ballots. Registered voters and 16- and 17-year-olds can serve as poll workers, and you don’t need to live in a community to serve as a poll worker in that community.

Poll workers are needed both on Election Day and during the early voting period. (For the November 5 General Election the mandatory early voting period is from October 26 to November 3.)

Some communities struggle to recruit enough poll workers. Without enough poll workers, voters may have to wait in long lines, and could be dissuaded from voting. Some of the communities that need more poll workers include Flint, Flint Township, Livonia, Saginaw, Southfield, and Warren.

In addition, some clerks need poll workers with special skills, like proficiency in languages other than English and familiarity with computers. Help Michiganders vote – sign up today to be a poll worker at MI.gov/DemocracyMVP.
