To vote in Michigan, you must be registered. To find out if you are registered to vote where you currently live, visit mi.gov/vote and click on “Your voter information.” You can also call your city or township clerk’s office and they can tell you if, and where, you are registered to vote.

If you’re not registered to vote where you live, it’s time to register!

If it’s BEFORE October 22, there are many ways to register to vote in the November 5 General Election. You can register:

  • In person at any Secretary of State branch office, your city, township, or county clerk’s office, any state agency that provides public assistance or services to people with disabilities, any Armed Forces recruitment office, or a voter-registration drive.
  • Online at mi.gov/vote. Click on “Register to vote online.” (To register online, you must have a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID.)
  • By mail. You can print an application, complete it, and mail it in. Get an application online at mi.gov/vote. Click on “Voter forms and publications.”

Starting October 22 (until 8 p.m. on Election Day), you only have one way to register to vote: in person at your city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency. While you’re there, you can request AND vote an absentee ballot. If you register to vote on or after October 22, and you’d like to vote in person at an early voting site or at your polling location on Election Day (November 5), ask for a registration receipt. Keep this receipt and bring it with you when you go to vote.

At this point in the election cycle, a lot of organizations are working to make sure that all eligible voters are registered, but they don’t always have the most up-to-date information. If you get any mailings or texts about your registration status, and you’re not sure if they’re correct, we recommend confirming your status online at mi.gov/vote or with your city or township clerk

Upcoming Key Dates for the November 5 General Election:

Now: Request an absentee ballot online or submit a paper application. If you want to vote from home, we recommend that you request your ballot by October 15 to give yourself enough time to receive your ballot, complete it, and return it to your city or township clerk by the deadline. (In most cases, your completed ballot must be received by your city or township clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day to count. However, if you are serving in the military or living overseas, your completed ballot must be postmarked by Election Day and received by your city or township clerk within six days after the election.)

September 26: Absentee ballots must be available for all voters. This is also the first day that you can vote in person, with an absentee ballot, at your city or township clerk’s office.

October 21: Last day to register to vote online or by mail (starting October 22, you’ll need to register in person at your city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency).
