Voting is the Cornerstone of Our Democracy, and Poll Workers are the People Who Make Our Democracy Run

Election inspectors, the legal name for poll workers in Michigan, are paid by local governments to help administer elections. Poll workers open and close polling locations and early voting sites, process voters and process ballots. Registered voters and 16 and 17-year-olds can serve as poll workers.

Poll workers are needed both on Election Day and during the early voting period. (For the August 6 Primary Election the mandatory early voting period is from July 27 to August 4.)

Some communities struggle to recruit enough poll workers to ensure that the election runs smoothly. Without enough poll workers, voters can wait in long lines and even be disenfranchised. In addition, some clerks need poll workers with special skills, like the ability to speak languages other than English and use computers.
