Dearborn invests $16 million in federal funds for flood mitigation
Commitment to more trees, rain gardens, permeable pavement

The City is asking residents to review and comment on a proposed $16.3 million investment in green infrastructure to help address flooding issues in Dearborn using federal funds.

Written comments are due by Sept. 21.

The three proposals for the federal dollars are to:
  • invest in extensive tree planting
  • construct and maintain large rain gardens on public property and encourage residential rain gardens
  • and install permeable pavement on neighborhood roads.

These efforts will be concentrated in areas hardest hit by the historic June 2021 floods, but will benefit the entire community. They will be a complement to improvements to the city’s stormwater system that will also be pursued, and are part of a multi-year, multi-pronged approach to reduce flooding hazards.

Comprehensive research resulted in the three proposals, and are outlined in a Disaster Recovery Needs Assessment and Action Plan. It can be viewed in English and Arabic at https://cityofdearborn.org/disaster-recovery

There will be also be a public hearing on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at 1:00p.m. at City of Dearborn Administrative Center, 16901 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI 48126. The purpose of the public hearing is to receive public comments on Dearborn’s CDBG-DR Needs Assessment and Action Plan.

Written comments on the Action Plan should be sent to DearbornDR [at] ci.dearborn.mi.us
