Starting October 19 through 8 p.m. on Election Day, Michiganders have one one way to register to vote: Visit their city or township clerk's office (or satellite office) and provide "proof of residency".

So what is “proof of residency”? It’s a document with a voter’s name and current address in the city or township where they live. Paper or electronic copies of any of the following documents will work:

A Michigan driver’s license or state ID card

  • A utility bill
  • A bank statement
  • A paycheck
  • A government check
  • Any other government document

Although it’s counterintuitive, a lease does not count as proof of residency.

For more information (in English, Spanish, Bengali, and Arabic), Michiganders can visit MichiganVoting.org. For more information and assistance in English, Michiganders can call (855) I-VOTE-MI. And for more information and assistance in several other languages, Michiganders can call one of the national election protection hotlines.
