The U.S. Supreme Court just rejected a theory in Moore v. Harper that would have given state legislatures nearly unrestricted authority to set the rules for federal elections. LWVMO had joined LWVUS and other state Leagues in an amicus brief, urging the court to keep power in the hands of the people rather than politicians.
“We applaud this Supreme Court decision which affirms the core belief in the role of checks and balances in our democracy,” said LWVMO President Marilyn McLeod. “In current as well as in previous litigation, the Missouri League of Women Voters has had to turn to the courts to reject election restrictions that violate our constitutional right to vote in Missouri.”
