Attorneys presented closing arguments in October in the League's lawsuit with NAACP of Missouri challenging provisions of HB1878. Decisions are expected by the end of 2024, but both will likely be appealed.
In the challenge of new restrictions on voter registration and absentee ballot solicitation, Judge Jon Beetem issued a preliminary injunction in October 2022 stopping the state from enforcing those restrictions. More than 175 League members had rushed to register as voter solicitors to comply with restrictions the court agreed are unreasonable. The court recognized the League plays "an essential role in encouraging and enabling eligible Missourians to participate in our democracy.”
The other case challenges a strict new photo ID requirement.
The plaintiffs in both suits are the League of Women Voters of Missouri and the Missouri State Conference of the NAACP.
