On May 15, Missouri Senators voted to cut off debate and undo the will of the majority of Missouri voters who passed ballot measures last year to enshrine reproductive rights in our constitution and guarantee paid sick leave for Missouri workers.
HB 567 now goes to the governor for his signagure. It takes away paid sick leave from over 700,000 Missourians. Missouri lawmakers purposely overruled the votes of 1.6 million Missourians who voted to pass this measure -- which passed by 57% at the polls.
The first stage of Prop A took place in January, raising wages to $13.75 for nearly 440,000 MO workers, injecting over $365 million into the MO economy. From May 1 until Aug. 28, when SB 567 takes effect, employers with business receipts over $500,000 a year must provide at least an hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked. Employers with fewer than 15 workers must allow workers to earn at least 40 hours per year, with larger employers mandated to allow at least 56 hours.
HB567 allows the minimum wage to increase to $15 per hour in 2026, as voters approved, but it would not be adjusted for inflation thereafter — a policy that has been in place since 2007. The sick leave provisions would be repealed entirely.
In a victory for proponents, the Missouri Supreme Court had voted to uphold Proposition A.
