Voting Rights Laws

We are at the forefront of the most important federal and state voting rights cases around the country. We actively oppose discriminatory voter photo ID laws, fight against attacks voter registration process and hold lawmakers accountable when they try to institute last-minute Election Day barriers. We work year-round to combat voter suppression through advocacy, grassroots organizing, legal action and public education.

After taking his oath of office joyfully with 40 other new citizens, my husband was greeted warmly by a member of the League of Women Voters, who provided him with everything he needed to register to vote. With the challenges being hurled at US citizens, I have felt close to giving up. Thankfully the League of Women Voters does not. The group deserves our thanks.

Despite facing a tumultuous year, we have made significant strides in our mission to promote democracy, voter education, and civic engagement in Solano County. Here’s a quick look at what we’ve accomplished, and the exciting future ahead.

The League of Women Voters Charleston Area and the national organization have a long-standing commitment to voter registration efforts at naturalization ceremonies. Their November lawsuit challenged an abrupt rule change that bans the League of Women Voters and other nonpartisan civic groups from registering new citizens at Immigration Services-hosted naturalization ceremonies. The complaint raises important legal claims related to the federal government’s failure to follow proper legal process and violations of our rights under the First Amendment.

South Carolina’s highest court ruled in favor of Statehouse Republicans, saying it is a legislative right to draw congressional maps even as critics say Charleston’s seat in Congress was unfairly drawn to gerrymander. “Partisan gerrymandering is an attack on our most fundamental right as citizens, the right to vote,” said Lynn Teague, vice president at the League of Women Voters of South Carolina. “The people of our state should demand a constitution that protects them and leadership that respects their voices.”
