Program Priorities

Program Priorities

Position In Brief:

2025-2026 Program Priorities

The following is in addition to the LWVUS AND LWVTN Program priorities.

Electoral Process and Voter Rights

-LWV M/SC supports efforts to ensure equitable access and assistance for citizens in exercising their rights to register and vote.

-We support efforts to provide secure, cost effective and efficient procedures of implementing the voting process.

-We support equitable, accessible restoration of rights to citizens with prior felony convictions.

-We support a nonpartisan and transparent redistricting process.

Education

-LWVM/SC opposes all reduction of funding for public education.

-We oppose public funding of for-profit charter and private schools, to include vouchers.

-We support the election of school board members and appointment of superintendents.

Government

-LWV M/SC supports merit-based selection and retention of judges. We also support the judicial selection process that will ensure that appellate judges are free from partisanship.

-We support an open government policy, encouraging transparency, free access to public records, and open meetings.

Environmen

Promote an environment beneficial to life through the protection and wise management of natural resources in the public interest. Because of issues related to our aquifers, we will emphasize not contaminating the water resources in our area. Although our efforts focus on local environmental issues, we recognize the global nature of environmental problems. We expect transparency in government management of any environmental resources and will work toward the understanding by community members of any private plans for "development."

Given the "One Earth" nature of our environment, where possible, we will work against the mindless disposal of materials (i.e., trash), and encourage an understanding of re-use and recycling. We also will look for, evaluate, and support creative ideas to keep waste of all kinds from being seen as used/useless and someone else's problem.

We actively encourage and model the idea that all people should spend some time outdoors. Ideally every day. While some individuals may want to spend this time doing something "productive," e.g., gardening, walking, biking, etc., we encourage people to spend any amount of time outdoors, even for very short periods of time to just 1) feel the air, 2) breathe the air, 3) see the sky or scenery, etc.

Gun Safety

-The League supports regulating firearms for consumer safety and believe them to be a major health and safety threat to our citizens.

-The League supports licensing procedures for gun ownership by private citizens to include a waiting period for background checks and other "common sense" gun laws.

-The League supports enforcement of penalties for the improper possession of and crimes committed with handguns and assault weapons.
