LWVLC 2023 Book Read: It's Hard Being You with Sharon Emery

The League of Women Voters of Leelanau County welcomes award-winning journalist and author Sharon Emery discussing her new book, “It’s Hard Being You: A Primer on Being Happy Anyway”.  Sharon Emery struggled with the losses and limits she faced but couldn’t change – no matter how hard she tried.  And she did try.  First with her incurable severe stutter, then with the death of her daughter, Jessica, and the too-early deaths of her own younger siblings.  Meanwhile her “broken” voice meant her long career in communications was a regular battle.

Celebrating International Women's Day and National Women's History Month

International Women’s Day began in New York City on March 8, 1857 when female textile workers marched in protest of unfair working conditions. It was one of the first organized strikes by working women where they called for a shorter workday and decent wages. International Women’s Day then developed and is celebrated in the United States and across the world.

The National Women’s History Month began in February 1980 when President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980, as National Women’s History Week. In 1987 the entire month of March was declared National Women’s History Month by the United States Congress, in perpetuity.

Watch this Forum to learn about the lives of international, United States, Michigan, and Leelanau County women from volunteers who will give short presentations honoring them. Presented by LWVLC Equal Rights Advocacy (ERA) Committee.

Electoral College 101: A Brief Tutorial

Myths Debunked: Common Misperceptions Used to Prop Up Our Failing Electoral College

In each Presidential election cycle, only a handful of swing states receive the bulk of candidates' - and the media's - attention. This reduces voter turnout in the non-swing states. Due to the Electoral College's "winner-take-all" mechanism, voters in rural areas in states with large metropolitan areas are typically disenfranchised. What incentive do these voters have to cast a ballot?

Facilitators: Phil Mikesell, Tricia Denton and Jacquie Johnson.

New Understanding, Thinking, and Action to Support Community Mental Health

Like physical health, mental health can be seen as a both a personal and community goal, one that has been significantly challenged by recent events such as the pandemic and now, the war in Ukraine. Efforts to ensure better mental health, more broadly, must be both preventative and supportive. Join this forum to hear about current work to improve the region’s mental health system, with a special focus on two aspects of this system: a preventative effort that provides young children a promising start by supporting them and their families and an effort to establish a northern Michigan crisis intervention center.

Secure MI Vote Proposal and Leelanau County Redistricting Map Discussion

This program examines legislative attempts to weaken Michigan Voter’s Rights and discusses approved changes to the Leelanau County Redistricting Map.  The League of Women Voters is educating voters on Michigan’s fair and secure elections in light of a ballot proposal that would make voting harder for many people. Secure MI Vote has received approval of a petition with the MI State Board of Canvassers AND is collecting signatures now to enact citizen-led legislation to:

• take away Election Day voting options
• make absentee voting less accessible
• gut funding for election administration in Michigan.

The League of Women Voters of Leelanau, along with other local Leagues and the League of Women Voters of Michigan, oppose the Secure MI Vote measures and supports Michigan’s current voter validation system that has worked for decades.
