Board Meeting Minutes
June 13, 2019

Minutes
Introductions: William Todd-Mancillas, Susan Serrano, Sandra Flake, Abe Baily, Andy Holcomb, Kathy Kirby, Stevi Mittman, Debra Barger, Carol Burr, Linda MacMichael, Elaina McReynolds
Carol Burr asked Susan ,who shared she is leaving for new position out of state, how can we work with Paradise Library. Susan Serano said that sharing information is a core value for this sharing. League and library can mutually support each other’s goals. Copies and link to document that was handed out on voter registration for fire victims are needed.
Linda would like pictures and bio for our webpage to share our caliber of board members.
William suggested idea for fundraising by providing an event at the Pageant. A number of members supported this idea.
- 1. Approve May 9 meeting minutes (emailed) Action Item
- Carol Burr motioned to approve the minutes, Susan Serano seconded . The motion was approved unanimously.
- 2. Gifts/tokens for any LWVBC speakers Action Item
- Andy suggested included gift cards, free lunch, potlucks have fed are speakers without asking them to bring or pay for food. Our defacto policy has been not to pay speaker. Carol suggested a note of gratitude. Kathy asked has anyone turned us down for lack of payment. No was the consensus. Debra shared AAUW did cover mileage for one of their speakers.
- Carol motioned that we provide a meal for speakers. Kathy seconded. Motion approved unanimously.
- 3. Annual Meeting follow-up Action Item
- Debra felt take away is that members would like more communication. Minutes for example to be put on website. Kathy pointed out that some members stated they wanted to be involved with big issues around budget. Membership engagement meeting is suggested by Linda. Dedicated meeting on membership engagement. Kathy said she understands their concerns about being left out but under the circumstances at the time we did the best.
- Susan Serano motioned to post meeting minutes to the website. Carol seconded. Motion approved unanimously. Minutes will be posted after approval.
- LWVBC Board appointment for director vacancy (Toni Reid to replace Carol Burr) Action Item
- Andy Holcomb motioned to accept Toni Reid. Kathy seconded the motion. Motion approved unanimously.
- 5. Fundraising
- a. Updates on August 18 event Information Item
- i. Update tickets for A taste of democracy are exclusively online.
- ii. Website will be key for promotion. Helen Gessick is stepping down as webmaster.
- iii. The League uses Square for taking money. If a person is not online but wanted to come they will have to have another person enroll for them online. We need people to check list of people at the door. It is possible to just donate money online. Confirmation will be emailed. Abe asked what else is happening on the program. Photos will be taken. High dollar value items will be in the silent auction. 10 high end items for example. $40 will go to restaurant out of the $100.
- Other – recycling Information Item $67 has been obtained for recycling. Debra will put dates in Voter that he will pick up recyclables to make donations for the League. Debra asked for dates or additional information in the voter. Carol suggested a separate communication. Maybe be in august. Linda said it will be taken up at July planning meeting.

- Andy got a good idea of what the League is about. He felt while cumbersome everyone got heard.
- Debra attended as much as she could. Learning about vote centers or voters choice act. May be covered at Fall membership meeting.
- Census was also discussed. We will know in 4 months from the Supreme Court on this topic.
- Helen Hutchinson will be interim director position as she leaves the head of the League.
- Prop 13 is on the November ballot.
- Charter schools were addressed.
- Climate change was addressed.
