Board members discussed the LWVBC’s activities during the election season. Patty updated board members about voter registration and outreach efforts during the fall season, including Voter Assistance Center volunteers. Satsie, Roxanne, and Toni shared their experiences volunteering at local Voter Assistance Centers, and board members discussed the voting experience and voter turnout throughout the county. Board members shared feedback and ideas about ways to help voters become more informed in the future.
Thank you to Carolyn Dusenbury and Carol Burr for providing multiple Pros and Cons presentations on ballot measures for various local groups. Thank you to Claire for her phenomenal job organizing the fall candidate forums. They were great events, and board members appreciated the positive recognition from the Chico Enterprise Record.
4. North Valley Community Foundation Week of Giving Fundraising Option
Debra and Sandra updated board members on the 2020 North Valley Community Foundation Week of Giving fundraising event, which will run from December 1st to 7th. Board members discussed whether this event should be the LWVBC’s primary fundraising effort for the rest of the year.
To participate, LWVBC needs to advertise on its social media accounts and its website. We would also need an email to LWVBC members with a sample message they could share on their personal social media accounts or in emails to their personal friends and family asking for donations to the LWVBC during this fundraising event.
Motion:
Maureen moved and Roxanne seconded a motion that the LWVBC participate in the 2020 North Valley Community Foundation Week of Giving fundraising event. Motion passed unanimously.
5. Activities/Programming for January 2021 through End of Fiscal Year
Board members planned a holiday happy hour on Thursday, December 3rd, from 4-6 pm to coincide with the NVCF Week of Giving.
What are the important legislative activities to focus on in 2021? The LWV will provide upcoming trainings on how to connect with elected legislative officials at the state and federal levels. Board members discussed several possible ideas for events, such as Oroville City Council districts, housing, watershed management as related to wild fires, Biomass, forest management, and alternatives to the Electoral College (national popular vote, rank choice voting, etc.). If LWVBC has an event in February, it can be advertised as an annual LWV birthday potluck event. Debra will be back in touch to nail down who can work on spring programming.
Board members discussed the League of Women Voters Semi-Annual Survey and how to respond to survey questions asking about 2021 legislative priorities, tools and resources the LWVBC plans to use for its upcoming legislative work, and the LWVBC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. One legislative priority discussed was election administration reform. Board members also discussed the barriers that prevent the LWVBC from being more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
