From the LWV-LDC president, February 2021:
As I sit down to write this note, while listening to the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, I am struck yet again by the historic precipice on which we stand, as the greatest Democracy in the world.
The League of Women Voters is 100 years strong in standing up for democracy. I am heartened and encouraged by our local League and the energy, involvement and passion with which we are charging forward.
The meeting with our Community Partners on Super Bowl Sunday yielded several priorities, the greatest of which is promoting health by getting our community immunized against the Covid-19. We will be working with LMH Health, the city of Lawrence, Haskell, the Senior Resource Center as well as others to educate and get people signed up to receive the vaccine. If you are interested in helping, please contact either me or Ma’Ko’Quah Jones. Our next Community Partners meeting will be Sunday, March 7, at 3 pm via Zoom.
Our Voter Services volunteers are working to develop voter registration and civic engagement education videos with the Mainstream Coalition. We will also be participating in the March 5-17 virtual St. Patrick’s Day Parade downtown.
The People Powered Fair Maps Campaign is in its second season. Educating voters about the importance of establishing an independent commission to draw the legislative district maps continues.
The By-Laws Review and 501c3 Committee will be meeting Feb 27 at 1 pm.
The Scholarship Committee will be picking up applications from high schools in early March.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee will be sending information and a survey to all League members soon. Watch for it, and please respond.
I will be attending virtually the 65th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women March 14-26. Look for information and updates on Facebook. CSW65 Priority theme is Women's full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
Now is the time to get involved. Don’t hesitate to ask a question, reach out, talk to people. Wear your mask and when available, get vaccinated! I am thankful for each of you and the opportunity to work together.
