Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (TADP) invites League members to this year’s Justice Day on the Hill set for March 24. Rather than the usual visits with legislators in their offices, this year will feature virtual visits, eliminating the drive to Nashville. The day will provide participants the opportunity of conversing with their home district legislators about justice issues that concern them most, including HB 1062/SB1349, “Modernizing the TN Intellectual Disability Statute.” The bill, supported by both the TN Disability Coalition and Tennesseans Against the Death Penalty, would take the critical step of giving those sentenced to death before 1990 access to the courts to determine if their intellectual disability makes them ineligible for the death penalty. At the urging of the TN Supreme Court, the bill would also update Tennessee’s definition of intellectual disability to current medical standards as urged upon the states by the U.S. Supreme Court.

This year, Justice Day will also include two excellent educational opportunities at 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) by leaders working on the national scene for the elimination of the death penalty. Watch for more information in the coming weeks as details for the presentations are finalized.
