The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge welcomes the community to Lunch with the League at 12:00 PM EDT (11:00 AM CDT), Tuesday, September 21.  In an effort to keep everyone safe during this time of pandemic, the gathering will again be virtual. Those who desire to gain access to the meeting may do so by following the instructions provided at the close of this article.

Redistricting Transparency and Engagement

Jesse Fox Mayshark, a veteran reporter and editor who has worked for publications including The New York Times, Metro Pulse, and the Knoxville News Sentinel, will be the speaker. In 2018, he cofounded Compass (compassknox.com) with fellow reporter Scott Barker, to provide independent coverage of local government and politics in Knoxville and East Tennessee. He has also seen government from the inside, serving as communications director to former Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero.

As both state and local governments move through rapid legislative redistricting this fall, some are being more transparent than others. Jesse Fox Mayshark, a reporter for Compass in Knoxville, will talk about best practices for an open, public process – and whether Tennessee state and local leaders are following them. Without public oversight and input, questions can arise about political motivations. Join us for the conversation.

The next months will present a challenge for citizens both local and state-wide to engage with their legislators to ensure a fair redistricting process; so much is at stake.

Lunch with the League welcomes League members and nonmembers alike to this informative presentation. The Zoom link to attend the virtual program is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85643332510?pwd=dVVldlE2amRZSlZIWGpkMkFVK3M2QT09. All League members will also receive an email with the zoom link prior to the meeting. A couple of days following the presentation, you may view the recorded presentation on the League’s website (https://my.lwv.org/tennessee/oak-ridge).

The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge is a nonpartisan political organization for men and women. It encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
