    Climate Emergency

The LWVUS Climate Action Plan (CAP) Team made a presentation at the 2022 LWVUS convention. It was entitled “Climate Action Plan Guidelines for Local Leagues” and consisted of the Ten Actions Cities and Local Governments Can Take to Reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions, which cause climate change. Eight of our team members from across the country, including Cynthia Cannady, worked very long and hard on this excellent presentation—and it showed. It was very well received!

The Resolution

The Climate Emergency Resolution passed at the LWVUS 2022 convention reads as follows: “We, as delegates of local Leagues assembled at the 2022 LWV US Convention, call upon the LWV US Board and state and local Leagues to urge state and local governments to adopt and publicize Declarations of Climate Emergency appropriate to local conditions and take appropriate action to implement the Declarations of Climate Emergency.” The resolution was brought by the League of Women Voters of Radnor Township (PA) and passed almost unanimously.

Implementation—We Need You!

We hope Leagues across the country will use the resolution to encourage their local governments to take Action to reduce GHG emissions. And we will continue to present the Ten Actions to our LWV-PA thirteen cities. As you can see by the language of the resolution, each League must draft its own climate emergency resolution with the full support of the LWVUS, which is specific to its local situations. The Natural Resources Committee plans to introduce a climate emergency resolution to each of our thirteen LWV-PA area cities. We need local League residents of our thirteen cities to help us present these resolutions. Please contact us if you are interested in working on this. The climate emergency is the most urgent situation of our time.
