Board Meeting Minutes

October 11, 2022

5:30 pm

Zoom

Members Present:  Satsie Veith, Sandra Flake, Toni Reid, Janet Rechtman, Carolin Langen, Marcia Moore

  1.  Call to Order

Meeting called to order at 5:30 p.m. by President Satsie Veith.

  1.  Approve Meeting Minutes

The minutes for the September board meeting were approved as submitted and read.  Marcia Moore agreed to be designated note taker for the meeting.

  1.  Quarterly Financial Report

Treasurer Sandra Flake reviewed the quarterly financial report which had been sent to the board members prior to the meeting.  There were no questions and no significant findings.  Treasurer Flake indicated that a new purchase of QuikBooks may be necessary due to our current one having become outdated.

  1.  Candidate Forum Update

The Assembly District forum will be held at 7 p.m. on October 20 to be followed immediately (approximately 8 p.m.) by the Congressional District Forum.  The fora will be online.  Redding and Placer County have been notified.

Informal discussion was held about the “empty chair” issue which has been variably noted to be an absolute rule vs custom from state or national League offices.  Further clarification will be attempted, and Marcia Moore volunteered to do some research on the matter.  More education of the public on the League’s position on this issue was recommended once we are sure of the policy.

  1.  Ballot Measure Presentation Update

Toni reported on the presentation to the AAUW on 10/10.  Sixty-five people were in attendance.  A webinar for LWV will be October 17 and will be subsequently available on our website.

  1.  Voter Registration Outreach Update

Members registered 15-16 persons at the Torres Shelter and 5 unhoused living at Windchime Park.  Members will register voters at the Chico Downtown Plaza Sunday, October 16 again attempting to reach the unhoused.

        9.  Committees and Other Regular Updates

            Natural Resources Committee

Toni Reid reported that publicity is going out for the next presentation on water to be held November 3 at 7 p.m.  Publicity will include a press release and email.

            Social Policy

Janet Rechtman reported an excellent turnout for the presentation on homelessness with 32 attending and 10 presenters.  The next webinar will be in February and some topics (still on the issue of homelessness) were discussed.  The committee is considering topics for the following year – with the possibility of policing, incarceration and parole mentioned.

Membership

Marcia Moore reported that a larger holder for name tags has been purchased due to the inadequate size of the prior case because of our increased membership.  Sandra Flake will be sending an updated membership list to Satsie so that emails can be sent reminding members that next year’s membership fees are due.  To simplify this process, she has arranged the list according to date of last paid membership.

        10.Other Business

The November 10 meeting on the 501c3 transition will be held at 7 p.m. online.  It was suggested that we ask Tom Carson to participate if he is available.  A notice will be sent to members this week and possibly once or twice more and will refer members to the information in the newsletter which Sandra Flake has prepared.

Tabling on campus on October 18 will be staffed by one or two volunteers 4:30-7 p.m.  Satsie will send out an email for one or two more volunteers.

We are participating in voter support training in Durham November 5-8 and currently have enough volunteers to staff the training.

Satsie notified us that Helen Hutchison from State LWV is soliciting members who may be interested in forming independent redistricting commissions.  The first meeting will be held this November and Satsie and Debora Barger will be attending.

It was decided that because our November meeting falls on Election Day, we will change the meeting date to Wednesday, November 9 and it will be online.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted, Marcia Moore
