NewsPassage of Amendment 7 will block communities from trying alternative voting systems or using voting machines. Many voters may have thought it was only about non-citizens voting.
LWVMO President Marilyn McLeod said, "We regret that Amendment 7 was approved by the voters. It was misleading due to the inclusion of the requirement on citizenship to vote (which already is required) and it will prohibit any chance in the future to adapt different ideas on elections that might prove beneficial, especially on the local level."
At a recent St. Louis Press Club event, St. Louis County Election Director Eric Fey stressed how current U.S. and Missouri law already blocks any non-citizen from getting on the voter registration rolls.
LWV’s Kathleen Farrell next shared why communities might want to try alternative voting systems. She explained both Ranked Choice and the “Approval Voting" system used in the City of St. Louis. Click here for a fact sheet on alternative voting methods.
