Our originally scheduled speaker, Alice Clapman, is moving from the Brennan Center to the ACLU. As she will be in the midst of her transition on June 10, she has recruited a research assistant at the Brennan Center to present in her stead. They had conflicts on June 10, so we are moving this program to July 8.
Connie Wu from the Brennan Center for Justice will discuss direct democracy and its role within the better understood political landscape of representative democracy. In Michigan direct democracy has been used by citizens in the form of petition initiatives to create the redistricting commission and give Michiganders increased voting rights and voting access, for example. But at the federal level and in other states, direct democracy is not necessarily a given, and some rights to direct democracy have come under fire.
League of Women Voters Detroit and the Detroit Public Library are partnering in talks promoting voter education and tools for action. This program will also be offered in person at the Knapp Branch. See below for the location and travel instructions.
A Zoom link will be sent to registrants before the program. We routinely initiate Zoom auto-transcription. If you need further accommodation for accessibility, please notify the organizer by 4:00 p.m. Eastern the Thursday before the program. We will address your need if possible.
A recording will be posted on the Detroit Public Library YouTube channel and on lwvdetroit.org a few weeks after the program.
