Last week, Republican lawmakers in both the House and Senate launched a renewed push to pass the SAVE Act, introducing two new bills, the SAVE America and MEGA Acts, that advance its "show your papers" requirements for voter registration. The first effort to pass the SAVE Act failed last year in the face of public opposition, and these two new bills are yet just another effort to undermine American's freedom to vote and make this unpopular policy law.
This week, the House is set to vote on a new variant of the anti-voter SAVE Act, now rebranded the "SAVE America Act." Don't be fooled by the name, this bill keeps the worst provisions of the original SAVE Act and makes them even more extreme. The SAVE America Act would require voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship in-person when registering to vote, and proof of residency in that state. Voters would also be required to present proof of citizenship along with photo ID when registering to vote AND casting a ballot.
