“Truth Ain’t Neutral”

In a climate of political pressure, public backlash, and growing attempts to control historical narratives, can museums, higher education centers, and cultural institutions still be trusted to tell the truth? Who decides what is taught, remembered, or erased and what is lost when fear outweighs scholarship? Join Lance Wheeler, VP of Learning and Engagement at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, for an examination of how cultural institutions navigate contested histories while facing demands to soften language, remove context, or whitewash the past. He will also address the real pressures institutions face including funding concerns, political interference, public scrutiny, and internal risk aversion and how these forces shape programming and interpretation.
