President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law that year on August 6th.  This action, born from years of struggle for voting rights in the face of white supremacist terrorism, is widely considered to be the single most important step towards making our country an inclusive, multi-racial democracy.
