Monday, October 19, is the last day to register to vote or to update your registration online or by mail for the November 3 General Election. Starting Wednesday, October 20 (through 8 p.m. on Election Day), you can only register to vote or update your registration by visiting your city or township clerk’s office, completing a registration application, and providing proof of residency.
Proof of residency is a document with both your name and the address where you currently live. You can use any of the following:
• A Michigan driver’s license or state ID card.
• A utility bill.
• A bank statement.
• A paycheck.
• A government check.
• Any other government document.
For most voters, Tuesday, October 20, is the last day we recommend dropping your absentee ballot in the mail. Starting Wednesday, October 21, we recommend returning your ballot in person to your city or township clerk’s office or satellite office, or to a secure drop box in your city or township. This helps to ensure that your clerk will receive your ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day (November 3). You can find the drop box(es) in your city or township by going to mi.gov/vote and clicking on “Your voter information.”
Serving in the military or living overseas? The absentee ballot deadline is different for voters who are serving in the military or living overseas - their ballots must be postmarked by Election Day (November 3) and received by November 9 in order to count.
Upcoming Key Dates for the November 3 Election:
Now: Vote in person, with an absentee ballot, at your city or township clerk’s office. Or, if you want to vote from home, request an absentee ballot online or submit a paper application. (If you want to vote from home, we recommend that you request your ballot no later than tomorrow (October 14) to give yourself enough time to receive your ballot, complete it, and return it to your city or township clerk by the deadline.)
October 19: Last day to register to vote online or by mail to vote in the November 3 General Election. (Starting October 20, you’ll need to register in person at your city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency.)
October 20: For most voters, this is the last day we recommend returning your absentee ballot by mail to avoid postal delays. (Starting October 21, we recommend returning your ballot in person to your city or township clerk’s office or to a secure drop box in your community.)
October 24: First day of the statewide in-person early voting period. All communities must offer in-person early voting at a designated early voting site starting on this day. Contact your clerk or visit mi.gov/vote to find out when and where you can vote early in person for the November 3 General Election.
