LWV is switching to a new member portal for all Leagues across the country on Feb. 1. Through ChapterSpot, you will be able to renew your membership online and update your own information (e.g. phone, email, mailing address) as needed. Dues will no longer be a fixed rate but will be pay-what-you-can (with a $20 minimum). On a member level, we hope these changes will make managing your membership easier. On a League level, this is expected to increase membership around the country and increase our ability to empower voters and defend democracy.

The League of Women Voters Nonpartisan Policy

The purpose of the League of Women Voters is to promote the informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League is nonpartisan in that it does not support or oppose any political party or candidate; it is political in that it takes positions on selected governmental issues after member study and agreement.

What types of elections are there?

There are three basic types — primary, general, and local. In addition, “special elections” can be called which are limited to one specific purpose, e.g., filling a vacancy.

Become an Election Expert

Being registered with a political party will make a difference when you vote in a Presidential primary election, but in California, it will not make a difference when you vote in the statewide primary election for state constitutional, U.S. Congressional, and state legislative offices.

Summary

Presidential Primary

If you are registered to vote with a political party, you will be given a ballot for that party in a Presidential primary election.

Action Alert - League of Women Voters (Vote for Your Rights)

Action Alerts

More than 50 years after the Voting Rights Act was passed, full protections for voting rights are not guaranteed for all voters. While we have made progress in expanding voter access, many people still face challenges to participating in elections due to factors including income, health, age, race, disability, and gender. Voting is a fundamental right, and all Americans deserve an equal opportunity to make their voices heard in our democracy.

Urge Congress to protect the right to vote!
