Streetsboro Board of Education Meeting

Meeting Summary:

"The Regular Meeting of the Streetsboro Board of Education was called to order on May 9, 2024, at 5:47 PM.

President Kristin Bedford opened the meeting with a Roll Call and the Pledge of Allegiance.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: A community member thanked the Board and Streetsboro school staff for supporting the Polar Plunge. Proceeds from the event benefit local Special Olympics athletes.

The Regular Meeting Minutes from 4/11/2024 and 4/13/2024 were approved.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Athletic Administrator Mr. Randy Tevepaugh introduced Basketball Coaches and a team member to speak on the historic season of the Girls' Basketball Team. The team ended with a record of 23-5 and had a deep run in the State playoffs. The Coach spoke about how hard the team trained during the off-season and how proud he was of the girl's effort. The team had a great run and won the first conference championship in school history. They did well in the regional final and were one game away from the state. They went as far as any basketball team in Portage County history. The Coach appreciated the support received from the Board and the Streetsboro Community. Many girls are returning, and expectations are high for next year.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The November ballot will include renewal levies for 3.5 mil and 3.9 mil. The treasurer emphasized that both are renewals and do not represent new money. Appropriations must be increased to cover the cost of capital improvement projects approved by the board. The General Fund shows a balance higher than last year due to tax revenue and home center rollback. Treasurer Brian Haines reviewed the five-year forecast. Currently, revenues are exceeding expenditures due to a 9-mil levy that had been passed. Expenditures are expected to catch up next year and exceed revenue due to inflation. State funding has been flat, and there are no guarantees of what state funding will look like. Revenue comes primarily from real estate taxes. It is essential to renew the current levies. Deficit spending will begin in FY2025. Wages and benefits are growing at unsustainable rates. Expenditures for special education students have risen significantly.

CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER REPORT: A local business was presented with an award that the district could get through the Ohio School Board Association (OSBA). It is called the OSBA Business Honor Roll and goes to large and small businesses that support their local school district. PERMCO Inc. was awarded for participation in the Career Fair, sponsorship of the Baseball and Softball teams, and sponsorship of graduation. A representative from PERMCO was presented with the award at the meeting.
Staff members presented a new program using technology in the kindergarten classes. The program was funded by the PTA. The program is called “Rocket Adventures”. Kindergarten students were allowed to interact with other adults and to learn new hobbies and activities. The students enjoyed the activities, and the staff plans to continue with “Rocket Adventures” next year.
May 11, 2024, is Lemonade Day for Streetsboro schools. Students sell lemonade and other treats at local businesses in the area. They must come up with a business plan. Proceeds must cover costs, and a share of the revenue must be donated to a worthy cause. Students are also allowed to keep a portion of their revenue.
Lisa’s School of Dance is entering into a facility rental agreement with the district.
The business office requests approval to purchase 236 Acer Chromebooks and Google Chrome Management Licenses for $55,252. This is more than is needed for next year, but there are projections of a large need coming in a future year, so this purchase will help to spread the technology costs over several years.
The AC unit in the High School building needs a new compressor. The building is currently operating on a single compressor, but it works on a two-compressor system. Insurance will cover the cost of the needed second compressor.
