Want to know the latest and the most local information about the 2020 Census? Join fellow Leaguers as we hear from Kathleen Clyde. Clyde served as co-chair of the Portage County 2020 Census Complete Count Committee with Portage County Auditor Janet Esposito.  The Kent League of Women Voters was one of many community groups who participated on the Complete Count Committee.

Due to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic and last minute changes by the Trump Administration, the U.S. Census Bureau announced this week that preliminary census data due by law by the end of the year would not be available until April 30. This preliminary data is used to determine how many representatives from each state will be apportioned to the House of Representatives for the next 10 years. The timeline for the second set of detailed demographic data used to draw districts is somewhat unclear. Usually states have that data by the end of March, although the Census Bureau has indicated it may take until the end of July.

We can discuss how these delays may impact Ohio's new process for drawing district lines and advocacy strategies for fair district lines moving forward. We can also review how the count took place, the reason for the delays, and any other questions or concerns League members may have.

ABOUT KATHLEEN CLYDE

Kathleen Clyde

Kathleen was a Portage County Commissioner in 2019 and 2020, and served four terms in the Ohio General Assembly representing Kent and most of Portage County. As a state representative, Kathleen fought for workers, organizing opposition and helping defeat the anti-collective bargaining legislation for public sector workers on the statewide ballot in 2011. She fought for women, sponsoring the Ohio Equal Pay Act for three straight general assemblies. She also became known as a national expert on election and voting rights issues, helping mount legal defenses to various anti-voter measures eventually vetoed or found to be unconstitutional in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2018, she was the Democratic nominee for Ohio Secretary of State, garnering over 2 million votes (47%) in her first run for statewide office. Kathleen is a graduate of the James A. Garfield school district in Garrettsville, Wesleyan University and the Ohio State University College of Law. She currently lives in Kent and is a member of the Kent League of Women Voters.
