LWVOR President Joye Montgomery’s Message
I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new 2025-2026 President of the League of Women Voters Oak Ridge. I’m stepping into this role with a deep sense of purpose and enthusiasm and in awe of the organization which I will represent. First, let me start with a brief personal history.
My husband and I came to Oak Ridge in 1993 on a 6-month assignment at ORNL. It did not take long before we made the decision to leave the congestion and bustle of San Diego, CA behind and call Oak Ridge our new permanent home. While my husband did his scientific research at ORNL, I worked as Director of the Arts Council of Oak Ridge for twenty years. During that time, I joined other organizations, sat on several boards and met many amazing people who call Oak Ridge home.
What made me say YES to being president was a desire to serve an incredible organization at a time when our world is changing and being challenged. Oak Ridge is growing, and growth is good, but needs informed, caring citizens willing to voice opinions; TN legislature is a “super-majority” and prone to make decisions which don’t benefit all; and the democracy of the US is at risk. I believe informed and active voters can make a difference. The LWVOR has and will continue to fulfill its mission to make a difference by disseminating factual information and supporting the right to vote for all.
Dissemination of factual information
With its forums, speakers of varied interest, and monthly newsletter, LWVOR provides timely true information to an informed electorate. Our Observer program is especially critical in Oak Ridge. The city has many boards and commissions, which make decisions that can impact citizens lives. Our goal is to have an LWVOR member at as many meetings as possible, listening and writing short articles about what has occurred. If you are a new member, please consider volunteering for this job.
Voter Registration
Voting laws and regulations continue to change. Where to vote, what documents you need and your rights as a voter are necessary information for all. Our Vote 411 is a wealth of voter information.
Other programs
Lunch with the League, informational and candidate forums, and our monthly newsletter, the Voter, all contribute to a vibrant involved group of dedicated members. What sets the League of Women Voters Oak Ridge apart is more than just its mission but its’ qualities that consistently shape how we show up for our community and one another.
