“Immigration and Asylum Policies: Past and Present” is the title of the talk to be given on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at noon during this year's last Lunch with the League meeting of the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge.
The speaker will be De Ann Pendry, distinguished lecturer and adjunct assistant professor of cultural anthropology at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She has published many articles on immigration policies, immigrant rights, diabetes care and other topics.
She has received several awards, including the Peacemaker Award from the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance and leadership awards from the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition.
Pendry earned a Ph.D. in anthropology and a master’s degree in Latin American studies from the University of Texas at Austin. She obtained two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in secondary education, Spanish and Latin American studies.
The public is invited to attend the Lunch with the League from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. All are welcome to bring their lunch or purchase a boxed lunch for a nominal fee. Coffee and tea will be served.
