The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge welcomes the community to Lunch with the League at 12 p.m. EST, Tuesday, December 7. In an effort to keep everyone safe during this time of pandemic, the gathering will again be virtual. LWVOR members and regular attendees will receive the zoom link by e-mail before the meeting. LWV of Tennessee Statewide Initiative to Restore Voting Rights

Restoring Voter Rights (RVR) is at the heart of our most precious right in a democracy – the right to vote. The LWVTN goals are trifold: Education, Outreach and Advocacy. Current projects include disseminating brochures containing steps in the restoration process, surveying all Tennessee county agencies to determine their restoration process (currently non-standardized) and partnering with the University of Tennessee Legal Clinic to inform volunteers and their clients who want to restore voting rights.

Katherine H. Greenberg, Ph.D. has both a scholarly and practical background in education and consulting, spending ten years as a classroom teacher working primarily with children from very low-income families. She developed an educational approach as part of the national Follow Through program and consulted in more than 6 countries. She is also lead author of a book on higher education pedagogy, published in 2019. She holds two graduate degrees from Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Greenberg spent 9 months in Jerusalem, Israel, as a Fulbright Research Scholar. During her academic career, she served terms as President of the International Association for Cognitive Education and Psychology and as Chair of a Special Interest Group for the American Educational Research Association.

Dr. Greenberg is Professor Emerita, Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she was as a member of the faculty for 33 years. During that time, she engaged in research and consulted with educators locally and around the world about new approaches to enhancing learning at any age and overcoming regressive social forces. She also served a term as President of the UT Faculty Senate.

Not content to rest on her laurels, she joined the Knoxville/Knox County LWV in 2017 where she became their Director of Voter Services, developing a Planning Committee Handbook for volunteers coordinating candidate events. In addition, she revised a Voter Registration Handbook for volunteers as well as developed a play book to explore Tennessee law about voting and voter registration.

In 2021, Dr. Greenberg joined the LWVTN Board as coordinator of a statewide initiative to restore voting rights to those who have been convicted of a felony - the Restoring Voter Rights initiative. The RVR initiative will begin the process of educating the public and standardizing Tennessee’s policies to make it possible for eligible citizens to restore their voting rights again.
