LWV of TN Position on Support of Gun Safety Legislation
Position In Brief:
A Statement in Support of Gun Safety Legisla5on
League of Women Voters of Tennessee
Debby Gould, President

Since 1990 the League of Women Voters has advocated for gun safety laws. We are appreciative that Governor Lee has called for a Special Legislative Session beginning August 21 to provide much-needed gun safety legislation. As an important first step, the Governor has proposed legislation for ERPO (Emergency Risk Protection Orders) which would create a process for temporarily removing firearms from individuals who are at risk of harming themselves or others.

Additionally, we urge the legislature to consider other measures that have been long-standing public safety priorities for the League of Women Voters:
  • Closure of background check loopholes for all gun sales
  • Secure storage laws to keep children away from unsecured guns
  • Required reporting of lost or stolen guns from homes and vehicles

The League of Women Voters of Tennessee believes that implementation of these common sense gun laws will benefit all Tennessee communities across the state.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters does not support or oppose any political candidate or party.
