REDISTRICTING-FAQs Voice Your Opinion

REDISTRICTING-FAQs Voice Your Opinion

The Commission welcomes and values input from everyone.  There are several ways to communicate with the Commissioners.  All comments are public records and are available for anyone to read on the website.

  1.  Provide comments while viewing a live streamed meeting.

All meetings and public hearings are live streamed.   Written comments are accepted during the meeting.  Currently comments are only accepted electronically.

Commenting during the livestream meeting is not as simple as we would like.  First, you need to enter the livestream meeting.  See FAQ 9 for instructionsOn the agenda page that you used to get to the livestream video, there is a second link for making comments.  But to use this link while continuing to view the meeting, you have to open it in a new window and toggle between the video stream and the comment page.  Experienced IRC watchers find it easier to use two devices at once, one for viewing the live stream and the other for making comments.

The Commissioners will not see your comments until after the meeting is over.  So you may find it just as effective to submit your comments after the meeting at a time that is more convenient for you.

  1. Provide comments while attending a Commission meeting or Public Hearing in person.

Currently comments at Commission meetings are only accepted electronically.

The primary purpose of Public Hearings is for commissioners to hear directly from the people.  Anyone is welcome to speak at a Public Hearing.  An orderly process for hearing from individuals will be established prior to the meeting.  The following protocol will be observed:

Citizens may only speak when recognized by the chair or the presiding officer of the meeting if the chair is absent or otherwise has delegated hearing administration authority. In compliance with Arizona’s Open Meeting Law, speakers should confine their statements to the issue on the posted agenda which is before the Commission. Speakers are also requested to limit their comments to approximately three minutes or as designated by the chair. Additionally, speakers are required to follow proper decorum. Speakers must use appropriate language; foul and/or abusive language will not be tolerated. Any speaker failing to follow proper decorum or any other guidelines may be asked to leave. Any breach of the peace or disruption of a Commission public hearing may be cause of report to law enforcement, arrest, and prosecution.

Opposing viewpoints may be expressed by the citizens present. As a courtesy, citizens are reminded to address their comments to the chair and the Commission, and not to the audience present. Please show respect for all speakers and avoid personal comments. Remember, the Commission must hear all sides of an issue to make an informed decision.

  1. Provide your comments any time that is convenient for you.

Comments can be submitted 24/7 through the Contact Us tab on the IRC website.  A direct link to the comment submission page is https://irc.az.gov/contact-us
