How to Evaluate Candidates for Local Offices

Too many voters spend little or no time evaluating candidates for local offices such as mayor, city council and school board, ignoring the fact that these folks will have more immediate and greater impact on our lives than candidates we send to Sacramento or Washington DC.

Here are a few suggestions for evaluating these candidates:

  • Do an internet search, especially if you know nothing about a candidate.
  • Check their website and look for social media accounts
  • Who supports them?  Look for endorsements by those with whom you agree and disagree.
  • Look up campaign financial reports.  Does the candidate receive donations from individuals and organizations within the community?  Who donates, and why?
