Frequently Asked Leadership Academy Questions
What is the Leadership Academy?
The Academy is a component of the LWVGLA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion {DEI) Policy Action Plan implementation strategy. It is new in that it brings together League trainings under one umbrella and memorializes the material as an institution. The goal of the Academy is to enhance and increase civic engagement leadership skills. Academy participants receive training in subjects identified with LWV using proven League training materials conducted by veteran League members. The subjects include fundamentals of Advocacy, Facilitiation, Legislative Interviews, Speaker/Presenter and Voter Services.
Who is the Academy for?
League members and potential members with the desire to become more effective leaders in their communities are encouraged to participate. League members who wish to build their speaker, advocacy, facilitation or other skills should enroll. These skills, while valuable to League activities are transferable to other aspects of life. Potential members now involved with their local Neighborhood Councils, Schools, committees at their place of worship or other social organizations will also find value in the Academy and may enroll to grow their leadership capacity.
Why enroll in the Academy?
LWV mission is to empower voters and defend democracy. Democracy is not a given. It's been said, democracy is not a spectator sport. We must actively participate to preserve it. In addition to personal professional development, issues top of mind like, redistricting, voting rights, criminal justice reform, and homelessness are more reasons to enroll in the Academy to hone skills for active participation in these and other matters.
When will it take place?
Beginning Wednesday, September 29 - 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and for 4 consecutive Wednesdays. Please see the attached Fact Sheet for more information.
Where will it take place?
The Academy will be presented virtually. Participants may join the training from the comfort of their home. You will receive all the log-in information shortly after you register.
