This month we celebrate Juneteenth on June 19, marking a day in 1865 when African Americans in Texas were finally freed from slavery, more than two years after President Lincoln proclaimed them free.
When people vote, it is expected that they can choose representatives who reflect their communities and are responsive to their needs. Election districts must be fair but because of gerrymandering, many communities are underrepresented.
