LWV President Responds to SCOTUS Stay Ruling in Mifepristone Case

On April 22, LWVUS President Dr. Deborah Turner issued a statement responding to the Supreme Court’s stay of a lower court’s decision to limit access to medication abortion by halting the FDA’s approval of the drug mifepristone. The lower court’s ruling threatens the process whereby drugs are scientifically tested, approved for safety and effectiveness, and made available to healthcare providers and their patients. The issue will be heard on appeal and most likely will return to the Supreme Court some months from now. In the meantime, confusion and uncertainty among healthcare providers as various states legislate against abortion care will continue to limit women’s reproductive freedom and threaten their civil liberties. Here is Dr. Turner’s statement:

“Women and those who may become pregnant deserve access to quality healthcare, including abortion and the privacy to make their own reproductive choices. Democracy depends on equal rights for all people. The League of Women Voters stands in solidarity with women and individuals who may become pregnant in the fight to protect reproductive freedom.”
