California Voting FAQs and Tips

How do I know if I am registered to vote?

Go to https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/. You can check your status, check or update your current registered address, and sign up to track your ballot after you cast it.

Do I need an excuse to vote by mail?

NO. All registered Californians will receive a ballot at their current registered address. Ballots will start to be mailed in the first week of October.

What is the deadline to register?

Monday, October 19 (online or by mail), or November 3 (in person only).

When do I need to mail my ballot?

Must be postmarked by Tuesday, November 3, and received no later than Friday, November 20.

Can I drop off my ballot in person?

Can I vote without a notary or witness? YES.

How can I avoid the most common vote-by-mail errors? MAKE SURE YOU:

  •  Place your voted ballot card(s) inside the Official Return Envelope.
  •  Securely seal the Official Return Envelope.
  •   Sign and date the back of the Official Return Envelope.

Can I vote in person before Election Day?

YES, both by early absentee and early in-person voting.

What is the first day to vote early in person at a Vote Center?

MONDAY, OCTOBER 24.

When is the last day to vote in person at a Vote Center?

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3.
