The intrepid School Board Observers representing the LWV-PA are seeing signs that spring is coming, with summer break in sight down the road.

Arcadia

The Arcadia Board of Education has reminded families that summer school is scheduled for the summer of 2020. Here is a short description: Current legislation permits school districts to offer summer classes in the following areas: reading and math interventions to meet standards; special education for students whose individual education plans (IEPs) indicate a need for services beyond the school year; and make-up classes for students needing to complete courses required for graduation.

Incoming tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders who are in danger of not graduating based on a grade of F in any course required for graduation are eligible for a limited online summer program in order to complete the minimum requirements to graduate. This summer, selected college preparatory courses in math and science that are approved by the University of California system will be added to offer more students an opportunity to stay on track for four-year university eligibility.

Pasadena

Pasadena Unified School District held its February 27 board meeting with a large audience. On the agenda was a public hearing to allow for public input regarding the charter petition submitted by Melkonian High School, a California Public Dependent Charter School.

There were about a dozen speakers supporting this charter school. There were a few opposed. The Elbie J. Hickambottom Board Room was jammed with more than two hundred people to support a proposal for a new charter high school.
