Why is redistricting so important?

Denying people equal power at the ballot box is discouraging to entire communities. When they see their vote is not important, they no longer see a need to vote. Redistricting—drawing voting-district lines using census data, so that groups with common interests have a chance to be heard—is essential if all people are to achieve equitable power locally and nationally.

Sean McMorris

Join us on April 7 via Zoom, Sean McMorris will offer his insights on the redistricting results following the 2020 Census. McMorris is the Transparency, Ethics, and Accountability Program Manager for California Common Cause and a longtime resident of L.A. County. As a journalist and a community organizer, he advocated for election reform in Alhambra and the City of Los Angeles. As a member of the California Common Cause team, he focuses on government ethics and transparency laws, money in politics research, and state and local advocacy for good government reforms.

Among the topics he will discuss:

  • New district lines: What went right; what went wrong?
  • What are the options for righting the wrongs before the next census?
  • What is the likely impact at the ballot box?
