Recent LWV US President Chris Carson will join us on Saturday, April 10th at 10:00 am to discuss Redistricting 2021
Chris led the California League’s successful efforts to create the Citizens Redistricting Commission and was instrumental in creating the national League’s Fair Maps campaign.
Most redistricting concerns are focused on state and congressional districts, while local election maps are often overlooked. Chris will focus on local redistricting - the timeline, recent legislation, local rules, gerrymandering (it is just as common locally), and how to advocate for fair maps in our region.
Voting rights begin on the ground - literally, with the drawing of election districts. Every 10 years, after the U.S. Census, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission adjusts the maps for State Assembly, State senate, and US Congressional districts.

Here is a power point on their process.
Our region’s local voting districts are drawn by the corresponding government bodies, many of which have incumbents who may have a special interest in how the maps are drawn.
The best safeguard against gerrymandering is the participation of citizens in the redistricting process. The State League offers an excellent Toolkit and a one-page fact sheet.
